SOCG PARTNERS IN THE PROCESS
No one entity can fully support the needs of young people. It is essential that families, schools, community- and faith-based organizations, government agencies, businesses, and other community groups work together to help youth and schools grow in healthy ways and to provide the safe and supportive environments they need to thrive.
SOCG is committed to creating partnerships with all its clients specific to their community and their needs. The organizations listed below have been champions for the work that SOCG has done in Southern California but partners like these exist in every city in every state.
Given the current state of the economy and especially the dire economic situation in the context of the educational arena, it is more important than ever to make connections with like-minded people who are dedicated to the same goal we all share – creating schools that produce responsible, empathic and productive members of a democratic society.

California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), located in Carson, California, has been a stalwart ally of SOCG and served as partner and host for multiple SOCG projects and programs from the Transition Institutes to Parent Symposia.
In collaboration with the Division of World Cultural Studies and the Department of Teacher Education, SOCG has served the needs of over 10,000 southland students, staff and parents in the work of creating career-ready and college prepared students who take responsibility for themselves and their community.
Through the on-campus support of faculty such as Dr. Munashe Furusa, Dr. Irene Vasquez, and Dr. Richard Gordon, traditionally underserved students had the opportunity to begin their post-secondary dreams on a beautiful university site a stone’s throw from their communities.

United States Congressman
Xavier Becerra
California’s 31st District
Rep. Becerra visited a remarkable group of students at Jefferson High School who are participating in the
Secondary Transition Education Program
(“STEP”)*,
which works to build self confidence among students and promote a greater sense of community at the school. The students participated in a mock congressional debate and vote during the visit.
November 20, 2007
First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992, Representative Xavier Becerra serves as Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and is a senior member of the powerful Committee on Ways and Means. His committee is responsible for formulating our nation’s tax, Social Security, Medicare, trade and income security laws. As Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, Rep. Becerra wields a strong voice in House Leadership, helping to set priorities and drive the legislative decision making process.

As a SOCG supporter, the Congressman regularly participated in SOCG functions like the Mock Congressional Debate pictured above and served as moderator for several student town halls on issues like immigration and student empowerment. He also generously hosted students from his District to Washington D.C. for events like the State of the Union Address.

JAN PERRY, LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL, DISTRICT 9
Whether implementing cutting edge improvements or ensuring delivery of fundamental services, Jan Perry is making a positive change in the lives of her constituents. Now in her second term as Councilwoman of the Ninth District, Perry represents some of the most diverse and vibrant communities in Los Angeles including Bunker Hill, Little Tokyo, and South Los Angeles.
As a SOCG ally, Ms. Perry has always been available for a keynote speech at a conference or graduation or to facilitate a town hall around a critical issue. Jan’s wonderful rapport with students and her empathy and relationship with the community make her an invaluable resource to the City of Los Angeles.
Some of Jan’s outstanding contributions to the work of SOCG are:
-
Providing buses for 750 9th grade students from a neighboring high school to the Museum of Tolerance in the wake of several large intergroup riots in 2006
-
Donating money for a student body president at Jefferson High School to attend the 2006 State of the Union Address in Washington D.C.
-
Offering complimentary tickets to thousands of students to venues and events such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, concerts at Disney Hall, and numerous Museums in Exposition Park near USC.
Gays and Lesbians Initiating Dialogue for Equality
The mission of GLIDE is to eliminate homophobia by providing the general public with factual information and diverse personal experiences about homosexuality. They accomplish this through live, interactive presentations tailored to specific audiences. They target educational, business, civic, social, political and religious groups in every ethnic and cultural population.
As a SOCG partner, GLIDE has been instrumental in providing students an experience they normally would not have and the results have been profound. Students begin to understand that the anatomy of prejudice is the same regardless of demographic or category, and that tolerance for one means tolerance and acceptance for all.
Fabian Nunez
Former Speaker of the California State Assembly
Fabian Núñez, a fellow native Californian from the Logan Heights neighborhood of San Diego, has been a labor union adviser and a Democratic politician. He served three two year terms as a member of the State Assembly, leaving office late in 2008. During his last two terms, Nunez was the Assembly Speaker, the 66th person to hold that position.
From 1996 to 2000, Fabian Núñez served as the Political Director for the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and, between 2000-2002, was the Government Affairs Director for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
As an ally of SOCG, Speaker Nunez supported and attended numerous SOCG projects such as the Y.E.S. As a result of that event, Speaker Nunez made good on is promise to bring every student attendee at to Sacramento for a visit and in April 2007, almost 100 LAUSD secondary students boarded a Southwest Airlines flight out of Burbank for a day they will never forget.
